Welcome to The Pedal Club

The Pedal Club was founded in 1941 by a group of cycling journalists and officials, wishing to meet and exchange diverse views. This wish resulted in the creation of a lively member monthly lunch. In 1946 membership was broadened to include those who have rendered service to cycling. The objects, which still remain, are to meet informally to discuss cycling topics and for prominent public people and others to address The Club. These principles remain and the membership could be described as an active “who’s who” from the cycling community. Monthly meetings are for members only, but members may invite guests. “The Pedal Club First 21 Years” provides a fascinating insight into the Club’s activities.

The Golden Book of Cycling

The Golden Book of Cycling cover

In the pages of this book, dedicated to future generations of cyclists, are inscribed descriptions of great deeds done in the cycling world, and against each record appears the signature of the performer.

These entries tell of meritorious rides or series of rides in competition or against the clock on road or path; of performances in the touring world of wheels that, by their prowess, example or universal utility, were deemed worthy of permanent record. There are inscribed, too, the achievements of men and women who, by their legislative ability or trade ingenuity or as a result of untiring and unselfish effort in general, have proved themselves benefactors to the sport and pastime.

This Golden Book of golden deeds is the gift of Cycling to cycling. It was opened to receive the first signature on the occasion of Cycling's second 'All-rounder' Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London on Saturday January 30th, 1932.

A Souvenir History of
the First Twenty-one Years

The Golden Book of Cycling cover

TODAY, 21 years after its foundation, the Pedal Club can claim to be recognised as the forum of all sections of cycling opinion. What were its origins, who were the personalities who set it going and what has it done for the cycling game as a whole? This history is published to celebrate the attainment by the Club of its majority and to try to record the answers to those questions. It is being presented on the evening of the commemoration dinner at the Cafe Royal, London, on November 21, 1962.
